Uniform Motion are not an ordinary band. At least not in the original meaning of the word. This bunch of young Anglo-French men are more than a musical formation, they emerged and grew as an entire art project, combining their three foundations of creative work: words, sounds and looks. Claiming to be influenced and driven by the things in life that, as the band states in their biography, “hit us”, their understanding of the all underlying principle of life descibes a continual straight line of projections which is only changed through major events.
Those events are the interest and motivation for Uniform Motion and one collection of observations and their transformation into music and picture are banned on their debut album called “Pictures”. Aaahh-records is more than chuffed and proud to release it and thus make it available for you all! For the founders of Uniform Motion, forms of art- expressions are inseperable, they want to stimulate both the visual and audio senses and have decided to combine their music directly to graphics. The band itself therefore does not only consist of musicians but as well of an equally estimated graphic designer, a sound engineer and a cameraman.
The brain and center of Uniform Motion is Andrew Richards, who provides the band with the musical backround and came up with the initial concept. He is the one in whom the collective project merges and who at some stage, after inhaling “the highway of life”, picked up an old guitar with two strings missing. This 4-string guitar is being treated and worshiped as the symbol of the starting point of Uniform Motion, it is the backbone of their debut album “Pictures” and is in its uniquely limited way being multiplied, dublicated, interlaced and dissonant- just imitating how life itself can be, in all the shapes in which it touches and hits us. The words, being backed up by a mingling sound of guitars, percussion and loop elements follow the same pattern, always occuring in order to transport content, rather than merely forming pleasant melodies.
The songs of Uniform Motion are processing pieces of art, graphic designer Renaud Forestié draws a picture relating to every song and plays an major part in the liveperformances in which he draws illustrations on a laptop, which are projected on screen in realtime. Flitting from impertinence to candour and reacting spontaneously to melodies and lyrics Forestié adds a whole new dimension to a musical performance. Breaking the structures and turning it into an interactive, flowing piece of thoughtful and honest popart, “Uniform Motion” animate the listener and viewer to put the instances of music and illustrations together like in a overdimensional puzzle.
Altough calling themselves a band and stressing the unity in their name, the hierarchy in Uniform Motion seems to be clear, a bunch of highly individual characters working on a communal idea under the command of Andy. However the music is only working with all the elements of lyrics, music, picture and last but definitely not least- production and mixing, which is carefully and professionally done, always with great caution, taste and respect to the simpleness of the melody. The songs are rich of sound, emotion and precision, but always grounded and never excessive.
